Cape Coral High School Athletics Surge 18 Percent With 3,850 Student Athletes

Cape Coral school district athletic directors reported 3,850 students on high school team rosters for the 2025-26 year, an 18 percent jump from the prior season. The increase spans football, soccer, track and volleyball across the city’s three public high schools.

The timing aligns with the release of the Lee County School District’s annual participation report on July 10. District staff tie the rise to expanded middle-school feeder programs and lower per-season fees that dropped from $175 to $125 starting last fall. Parents in neighborhoods from Burnt Store to Pelican have cited easier access to after-school training as a factor in keeping teens active year-round.

Programs at Specific Venues Fuel the Uptick

Coaches at Cape Coral High School on Chiquita Boulevard credit the new weight-room hours at the adjacent Recreation Center on Nicholas Parkway for drawing 120 additional athletes into strength and conditioning sessions. Across town, Ida S. Baker High School partnered with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department to run free Saturday clinics at the Cape Coral Sports Complex off Veterans Parkway. Those sessions alone added 85 new track and cross-country participants this spring.

Local fitness culture shows up in the numbers. Girls soccer rosters grew by 22 percent while boys basketball held steady. The district attributes part of the shift to the addition of a girls flag-football league that began play in September 2025 at the Sports Complex fields.

Next Steps for Families and Coaches

Registration for fall 2026 sports opens August 1 through the district portal. Families can attend open-house nights at each high school the week of July 20 to learn about tryout schedules and transportation options from neighborhoods along Cape Coral Parkway. District staff also plan to add two more middle-school clinics at the Nicholas Parkway site before the new school year begins.
